Description
6, 6A and 8 Church Street is a house that has been converted into two shops and one flat. It likely dates from the early 17th century and has undergone alterations. The building features a timber frame with painted rubble infill and rubblestone, along with some tile-hanging, topped by a plain tile roof. It is two storeys high and consists of four bays, with the left bay being an addition that includes a later full-height archway. The three bays on the right are symmetrical, with the wider central bay containing two windows.
On the ground floor, there are two late 20th-century shop fronts, with an entrance to No 6A located between them. The first floor showcases timber-framing with square-panelled sections and arched tension braces between the windows, which are set under the wall plate. These windows consist of three lights, featuring ovolo-moulded wooden mullions, central iron casements, and leaded glazing. The roof has a rebuilt ridge stack positioned between the first and second bays.
At the rear, No 6 (on the left) has a rubblestone ground floor and a timber-framed first floor, with the feet of some old rafters visible. There is a later 20th-century addition from 1933 that is not of special interest. The right return has a 20th-century render on the ground floor and tile-hanging above. Within the archway on the left return, the original timber-framed structure has a ground floor made of rubblestone with brick quoins and a timber-framed first floor.
