Description

The building at 2 and 2A Church Street, formerly known as the Skinners Arms Public House, dates back to the 17th century and has been largely rebuilt and extended in the late 18th century and early 19th century, with some alterations in the 20th century. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features a plain tile roof. The structure is two storeys high with six bays arranged in a 2:3:1 pattern, where the right bay is canted, and it has a parallel rear range.

The front includes four shop fronts from around 1900, characterized by fluted pilasters that support a frieze and a bead-and-reel band, along with bowed small-pane windows. The doors have small-paned glazing, with two set in panelled reveals. On the first floor, there are sash windows with glazing bars, although the two on the right are from the 20th century. These windows are set in reveals with flat brick arches and projecting sills, topped by a coped parapet. The roof is hipped at the left end and has a stack positioned between the second and third bays.

At the rear, some sash windows with glazing bars are found in flush wood architraves on the first floor. Inside, there are large-scantling beams with run-out stops in the three right-hand bays on the ground floor, along with a timber-framed partition separating these from the rest of the building. On the first floor, straight braces extend from wall posts to the tie-beam. The beams and remnants of timber framing indicate that this was originally a two-bay 17th-century building that was refronted and expanded to the left and at the rear in the 19th century.
