Description

This early to mid-19th century building in Godalming’s Church Street was originally a house, and is now occupied by two shops with an office above. The building is constructed of red brick in a stretcher bond pattern and has a plain tile roof, with a section at the rear having a roof of Welsh slate. The main front is two storeys high and three bays wide, with a lower, two-storey wing extending to the rear left. The ground floor features early 20th century shop fronts, each with a canted window to either side of a recessed entrance, along with fascia boards and a cornice. The first-floor windows consist of a sash with glazing bars between two tripartite sashes, with the central sash having glazing bars and the outer sashes divided into four panes. The windows are set in reveals with flat brick arches and projecting sills. The roof on the left-hand side is hipped, with a tile-hung gablet. The return to the left shows a taller wing containing a ground-floor office entrance, and a first-floor canted, tile-hung window with a 12-pane sash flanked by 4-pane sashes, and a reeded frieze. Inside the main front section, the roof features braced king-post trusses and a plank ridge piece. The building is included on the list for its contribution to the group value of the surrounding buildings.
