Description
The Star Public House is an 18th-century building that incorporates elements from possibly the 16th century and has been altered over time. It features painted brick in Flemish bond and some painted rubblestone, topped with a plain tile roof. The structure is two storeys high and has three bays. There are two doors located on the right side of the first and third bays, each with small-pane glazing above two panels. The right door is set below a header brick arch, while the left door has a three-light transomed window to its left, adorned with pilasters and a frieze that displays the name of the pub. Between the doors is a segmental brick-arched three-light small-pane casement window. The first floor has three similar square-headed windows and a platband on the left. A 20th-century projecting pub sign is present, and the building features stepped dentilled eaves. The roof is hipped on the right side and has two stacks at the rear. The right return shows a ground floor of rubblestone. At the rear, there is a short central wing with a gable stack, a later 19th-century single-storey extension to this wing, and a 20th-century wing on the right that is not of special interest. The interior has not been fully inspected, but the left bay on the ground floor includes a hollow-moulded spine beam, lambs-tongue-stopped joists, a wall post, and a cross-beam on the right with mortices in the soffit, indicating the position of a former wall, suggesting that the earlier building may have extended further to the left.
