Description

No 22 is a house located on Church Street in Godalming, dating from the early to mid-19th century, with earlier origins and raised in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of brick, rendered at the front, with a tile-hung second floor and a plain tile roof. It stands three storeys tall, with the top storey being an addition, and features three bays.

The ground and first floors include a plinth, rusticated quoins, a cornice, and a central six-panel door. The door has raised and fielded upper panels, two lower reeded panels, an iron knocker, a door knob, and an over panel set in a panelled reveal. The wooden doorcase is adorned with reeded half-columns, an entablature, and a deep cornice. Above the door is a sash window with glazing bars, while the other windows are tripartite sashes, consisting of a sash with glazing bars flanked by narrow four-pane sashes, all set in reveals with projecting sills.

On the second floor, there are two four-pane sash windows beneath corbelled pentices, which are located under paired gables with bargeboards. The interior features a cross-beam with lambs tongue stops in the left room on the ground and first floors, and a chamfered, jowled wall post in the first-floor room, which are likely remnants of an earlier house on the site. The building is included for its group value.
