Description
31 Church Street is a house that has been converted into a hairdressers. It likely dates from the late 16th century and has undergone alterations. The building features a timber frame with brick infill and a combination of brick and rubblestone, with the front painted. The roof is covered with plain tiles.
The front elevation shows that the ground floor is underbuilt in brick and rubblestone, featuring a 20th-century glazed door to the left of a 20th-century shop window with two large panes. The first floor jetties out and displays close-studded timber framing, with some panels featuring herring-bone laid brick infill. There are small-pane casement windows with two lights on the left and three lights on the right. The roof is half-hipped on the right side, with a brick stack at the end. The right side of the building is constructed from 19th-century brick in Flemish bond, with jowled wall posts at the corners.
At the rear, the ground floor is obscured by a 20th-century addition, while the first floor retains small-panelled timber framing with one straight brace to the wall-plate and a two-light small-pane window.
Inside, the ground floor features large-scantling chamfered cross-beams with stepped stops, and there is a two-light, small-paned casement window in the former rear wall. On the first floor, the wall posts are arch-braced to a central tie-beam, which has small mortices in the soffit from a former partition.
