Description

No. 33 Swinegate is a house that has been converted into a restaurant and hairdressing salon. The original building likely dates back to the 15th century, with significant alterations made in the early 17th century, including raising and re-roofing the structure. A rear wing and staircase were added around 1700. The building was refronted and the rear roof was hipped in the early 19th century, with further changes and extensions occurring in the 20th century.

The front part of the building is timber-framed and faced with stucco that mimics ashlar stonework, while the rear is constructed of red-brown brick. The roofs are covered with pantiles, hipped at the back, and feature stone-coped gables on the parallel front ranges.

The exterior is three stories high with a three-window twin-gabled front. There is a 20th-century shopfront with an upstairs door to the left. The first-floor windows are 4-pane sashes, while the second-floor windows are 2-light casements, all set within raised architraves and featuring rendered sills. A moulded band runs along the second floor. The rear of the building also has three stories and three windows, although the ground floor is obscured by an extension. The first-floor windows include 4-pane sashes and one glazed door, while the second floor has casements, all with segmental brick arches above.

Inside, a quarter-turn staircase leads to the second floor, though the bottom flight has been altered. The original staircase features slender turned balusters, square newels with pendants, attached half balusters, and a moulded handrail that ramps up on the lower flights. There is also a moulded dado rail in the ground floor stairwell, and fragments of the timber frame are visible on the first and second floors.
