Description
This building, located at 12 St Sampson's Square and 1A Church Street in York, consists of two houses with shops that were constructed between 1836 and 1839. The property was refurbished and had its shopfronts replaced in 1994. It features painted brick in Flemish bond, a slate roof that is hipped towards St Sampson's Square, and includes scrolled corner brackets and brick stacks.
The exterior of both fronts is three storeys high with two windows each. There is a shop entrance situated in a canted corner between plate glass shop windows, and the shopfront extends along the Church Street side. A plain door is incorporated at the left end of the St Sampson's Square front. The first and second floor windows on both fronts are 12-pane sashes with slender glazing bars, painted stone sills, and cambered brick arches. A plain eaves frieze band and cornice supported by paired modillions can be seen. Additionally, the Church Street front features a moulded rainwater head at the left end of the cornice. The interior has not been inspected.
