Description

The Roman Bath Public House is a public house located at No. 9 St Sampson's Square in York. It was built between 1929 and 1931 and incorporates remains of a 4th-century Roman bath-house, which was constructed for the 6th and 9th Legions. The pub was designed by B Wilson.

The exterior features a ground floor made of rusticated stone with ashlar dressings, while the first floor has a replica of timber-framing with red brick infill, including some herringbone patterns and some stretcher bond. The roof is made of Westmorland slate with a brick stack.

The building has two angled fronts to fit its corner site, both of which are two storeys high and consist of two bays, with one bay in each front gabled. The main front on St Sampson's Square has an entrance at the right end, featuring a panelled door with an overlight in a doorcase supported by half-octagonal columns capped with finials. To the left of the entrance is a four-light mullion window. On the first floor, the gabled bay is jettied on corbels and brackets and has a four-light window, while above the door is a single casement window. The secondary front to the left mirrors the details of the main front, with the original door blocked by a fixed light window. All windows are leaded and include coloured glass motifs.

Inside, parts of a Roman caldarium, frigidarium with apse, and hypocaust footings are preserved in the cellar. The public house was formerly known as The Mail Coach.
