Description

The Three Cranes Public House is a public house located at No. 11 St Sampson's Square in York. It was built in the mid-18th century, with some alterations made in the late 19th century and a refurbishment in 1933. The ground floor features timber and glazed tiles, while the upper floors are rough cast and color washed, adorned with painted chamfered quoins and a molded eaves frieze. The rear wing is constructed of orange-black brick in an indeterminate bond, topped with a rebuilt brick stack and a Westmorland slate roof.

The building has a central entrance with a rear wing and stands three stories tall with a two-window front. The inn front on the ground floor is framed by timber pilasters beneath a narrow frieze and cornice. There is a passage arch at the left end, and a panelled door in the center, flanked by three-light segment-headed windows with molded sills. The upper floor windows are four-pane sashes set in raised architraves, also with molded sills. Between the first-floor windows is a glazed tile panel depicting the Three Cranes, framed with a molded surround and a semicircular head. Most openings in the rear wing have been altered, but one 16-pane sash window with a molded sill remains. The interior has not been inspected.
