Description
No. 6 St Sampson's Square is a house that has been incorporated into a department store. It dates from the mid-18th century and has undergone later alterations, including a 20th-century shopfront. The building is constructed of rendered brick that has been colour-washed, featuring a timber shopfront and an eaves cornice, topped with a slate roof.
The exterior consists of three storeys with a three-window front. The shopfront includes a six-panel passage door on the left side. The windows are unequal 15-pane sashes on the first floor and unequal 9-pane sashes on the second floor, all framed in moulded surrounds with narrow sills. A bold modillion eaves cornice is present, with a fluted bowl rainwater head located at the left end.
The interior is not accessible, but records indicate it features an open string staircase with turned balusters, and the top flight has re-used balusters from around 1700. The first-floor room includes fluted architraves and angle roundels, while the second floor contains a moulded stone fireplace surround. This house was originally part of the Golden Lyon Inn, located at No. 5 St Sampson's Square.
