Description

The Old Council House is a building that has been converted into two commercial premises. It likely dates from the mid to late 16th century and has undergone alterations and a new front in the late 19th to early 20th century. The structure features a timber frame that is plastered, with applied timber framing on the front and a clay tile roof. It is one storey high with an attic and has a gable end facing the road, consisting of one by two bays.

On the left side, there is a late 19th to early 20th century outshut with a catslide roof. The shop front on the right is recessed beneath a jettied first floor, featuring a half-glazed panelled door on the right, flanked by console brackets that support a fascia. To the left of the door is a three-light leaded casement window, similar to the one-light window beside it. The first floor has a bracketed oriel with three one-light leaded casements and decorative barge boards. The outshut on the side has a terracotta finial and a two-light window at the rear, along with a 20th-century door below a sash window that has glazing bars and a round arch to the upper sash. There is also a 20th-century extension to the outshut on the right, which includes a door leading to the upper floor.

Inside, the ground floor features a large scantling spine beam. The attic contains wall plates and tie-beams, with the central tie-beam being cambered and supported by windbraces. The top of one wall post is visible, along with a decorative cast-iron fireplace at the centre and a panelled cupboard door beside it. It is likely that more of the original frame remains hidden behind the internal wall claddings.
