Description

Numbers 51, 51A, and 52 on Downing Street are late 18th century buildings that are two stories tall and constructed of brick with an old tile roof. The first floor features three windows, each four panes wide. Number 51 has a small early 19th century, three-light shop window with a half-glazed door, framed by pilasters and an entablature. Number 52 has a similar but larger shop, which has been altered, featuring two windows and a half-glazed door located to the right of center. Number 51A is part of the rear range, dating from the late 18th to 19th century, also in brick. It has two windows above and three below, with sash windows at the right end, though some glazing bars are missing. The left side has two-light casements, with the lower one being segmental headed. There is a segmental headed doorway with a wooden boarded door. Further east, there is a parallel wing that recedes; the western part is used for domestic purposes and has a front wall of a church, while the eastern part features a front wall of ironstone and has a lower roof at the east end. The listed buildings on the east side from numbers 44 to 57A form a group, with numbers 50, 51, 51A, and 52, along with a range of outbuildings in the northeast corner of the yard (which lies between numbers 51 and 51A), forming a smaller group within the main street group.
