Description

This is a row of early 19th-century buildings, numbers 38 to 52, on Palmerston Street. The buildings are constructed of brick with slate roofs. Numbers 38 to 40 form a continuous terrace, but number 48 has a separate, wider, and taller frontage. Numbers 50 and 52 are similar to number 48 and are set back from the road.

Numbers 38, 40, 42, 44, and 46 each have one window bay and a door. All except number 46 have a two-light casement window above and a two or three-light casement window in a segmental arch below. Number 46 has a four-pane sash window on both floors; the lower window is within a segmental arch. The doors are six-panelled, set within reeded architraves, and all except number 46 are set within segmental arches. Number 46's door frame is ornamented with roundels at the corners and has a small, thin hood above. Number 48 has two four-pane sash windows in brick reveals above and a similar sash window below to the south, featuring rubbed brick voussoirs. The ground floor door is centrally located, with the top two panels cut away and glazed. It is set within reveals, has a reeded architrave frame ornamented with roundels at the corners, and features a plain frieze with small flat hood and small shaped brackets above. The southern part of number 48, containing the door and the southernmost bay, projects slightly on both floors. A wooden boarded door, set within a segmental arch frame, is located in the northernmost bay on the ground floor. Numbers 50 and 52 form a symmetrical pair, each with one window bay. They have two-light casement windows with glazing bars in reveals, both above and below, and feature rubbed brick voussoirs. The doorways are coupled in the centre, sharing a common frieze and flat hood supported by shaped brackets. The doors are flush-panelled.

Numbers 38 to 52, Palmerston Street, are part of a group of listed buildings which also includes numbers 70 to 84 (even) and 47 to 55 (odd) on The Hundred.
