Description

The Manor House, located at 19 and 21 Palmerston Street, dates from the 15th to 16th century and was restored in 1929. It is a two-storey building with an attic and features an almost symmetrical front with three gables, the northernmost of which is recessed. There is a small additional gable situated between the central and left-hand gables, which has an entrance door beneath it. Each gable is adorned with contemporary moulded bargeboards. The structure is timber-framed with brick infilling; the northern gable is plastered, the central gable has a herringbone pattern, and the southern gable consists of red brick infilling using stretchers only. The central gable is more elaborately treated, featuring a moulded trimming beam on cut corner brackets beneath an oversailing first floor. The upper parts of the other gables also oversail, supported by plain joists. The roof is covered with old tiles.

The southern and central gables each have a three-light casement window in the center, which includes attic windows, some of which are 18th century and others modern, all with rectangular lead panes. The northern gable has a two-light, 18th-century lattice-paned casement and a six-panel door to the north, with the upper two panels cut away and glazed. The main entrance door is modern and set in a deep recess, featuring an original moulded oak frame with a four-centred pointed head and moulded spandrels. Above the door, there is a small window on the first floor in the small gable. The lead guttering is modern and dated 1929.

The Manor House is part of a group of listed buildings on Palmerston Street, which includes Nos 70 to 84 (even) and 47 to 55 (odd) The Hundred.
