Description
23A and 23B on Palmerston Street are two adjoining buildings from the late 18th or early 19th century. No 23B is located to the east of No 23A, with its south front facing the stream and the bypass, while No 23A faces west or south-south-west. The west front of No 23A features two storeys and an attic, constructed of red brick with a brick dentil cornice and an old tile gabled roof. It has two flat-roofed dormers arranged asymmetrically, three sash windows with segmental heads on the first floor, and two similar windows on the ground floor, all without glazing bars. The central entrance consists of a six-panel door set in a panelled reveal, framed by a delicately moulded Doric doorcase with pilasters and an entablature that has a pediment above, which is broken forward over the pilasters.
The south front of No 23B is also from the late 18th to early 19th century and consists of an east-west wing in two sections, with the western section possibly being part of No 23A. The red brick fronts include some vitreous brick headers, and the old tile roofs have been partially renewed in the west. The western part features a higher front and roof, with an angular bay that projects on both floors, topped with a moulded wood cornice. The first floor has a sash window in the centre, while the ground floor has a casement window in the centre. The eastern section is two storeys with an attic and an old tile roof, featuring two sash windows on the first floor in brick reveals (one with four panes and the other with three panes). On the ground floor to the left, there is a four-panelled door with a porch that has wooden boarded sides and a sloping slate roof above. To the left of this door is a small narrow segmental-headed window, and to the right, there is a segmental-headed casement window with two lights. Nos 23A, 23B, and No 64 form a group.
