Description
44 Downing Street is a 19th-century building featuring a timber-framed wing at the rear. The street-facing side has two storeys and three window bays, although the central opening on the first floor is blocked. It has a capped panelled parapet and a stuccoed front. The first-floor windows are sash windows set in reveals without glazing bars, while the ground floor has a 20th-century plate-glass shop front. The return wall is made of painted brick and has a half-hipped gable end with a tiled roof. Behind the main structure is a short, much lower timber-framed wing that has square panels of timber-framing and infilling above a plastered sill. There is also a slightly lower short wing built behind this, with its gable end facing east and corbelling on the corner. This building is part of a group that includes all the listed buildings on the east side from numbers 44 to 57A.
