Description
Numbers 37 and 38, located on the east side of Downing Street, are early 19th-century buildings that underwent alterations and restoration in 1950 by G. Maxwell Aylwin. The structure is two storeys high and features four windows. It is finished in stucco and consists of two wide bays and two narrow bays, each flanked by Ionic pilasters. The cornice and parapet step up over the two central window bays, which are adorned with ball caps at the angles and in the center of this elevated section. The two central window bays have round-headed arches that now contain modern curved shop windows with glazing bars. The narrow flanking window bays feature single sash windows, each flanked by their own pilasters; the left one has been converted into a doorway, with smaller windows above. The gable end of the return wall along Ivy Lane is made of white painted brick with a moulded plinth and has two windows; the left window is a sash window with four panes. Further east, the end of the range has two bays, with a three-pane wide sash window on the first floor to the right and a two-light casement window with small panes to the left, along with a modern door and windows below.
