Description
Ivy House, also known as the Conservative Club, is an early 18th-century building featuring two storeys, an attic, and a cellar. The south front is U-shaped and constructed of chequer brick set on a chamfered plinth. It has a moulded and modillioned wood cornice and a hipped tile roof with five dormers, three of which are located in the central section and feature small sash windows.
On the first floor, there are four windows in the central part, each with architrave frames. The ground floor has two early 19th-century French casements on the left side and a four-panel early 19th-century door with a three-pane arched fanlight. This door is framed by Doric pilasters, heavy cut brackets, a broken cornice, and a segmental arched pediment hood. To the right of the door is one 18th-century window.
The right wing has two windows on the first floor, which were formerly adorned with decorative cast and wrought iron scroll pattern flower guards. It also features two tall arched windows that extend down to floor level on the ground floor. The left wing contains two tall windows on the first floor, a half-glazed door with an eight-pane rectangular fanlight to the right on the ground floor, and a small single-storey extension with a pent old tile roof across the left section. There is also a modern single-storey extension to the right of the ground floor window.
A 19th-century verandah spans the ground floor of the central part of the building. At the back, there is a wing constructed of timber frame with brick infilling. Inside, there is a contemporary staircase with a twisted baluster and a moulded handrail. This building has considerable character and would benefit from careful restoration.
