Description

This property comprises two buildings, number 4 and number 5, located on The Borough. The frontages date to the 18th century. The upper part of number 4 is brick, while the front of number 4 is timber-framed with a brick front. The timber frame is visible as rectangular panels with painted brick infilling on the south-west wall and in the west wall of the entrance passageway to number 5. The street front of number 4 features a central, first-floor Palladian window, a wood frieze with triglyph and roundel ornament, a moulded wood cornice, and a brick parapet with stone coping. A modern plate-glass shop front occupies the ground floor.

Number 5 has a timber-framed core and a more recent front reconstruction. The front features a large, angular first-floor bay with a triglyph frieze and cornice, positioned above a similar-sized angular shop window on the ground floor. The ground-floor shop window has pointed arched glazing. A doorway is situated to the left, enclosed in a wood surround with a panel reveal, architrave, panelled pilasters with 'drop' enrichment, carved brackets, a roundel head ornament, and a delicate enriched cornice. A frieze between the brackets contains urn ornament. It has a 4-panelled door. Historically, numbers 4 and 5 were once occupied together with number 6, The Borough, as noted in N Temple’s "Farnham Buildings and People."

The buildings are part of a group which includes numbers 1 to 9 (consec), numbers 1 to 6 Town Hall Buildings, numbers 108 to 122 (consec) West Street, and numbers 1 and 77 Castle Street.
