Description

No 1A on The Borough is a historic building that includes a gate room above a yard leading from No 1 The Borough, along with a lower range to the north. Both sections are constructed with timber framing. The gate room has two storeys and an attic, topped with an old tile gabled roof that runs along a northeast-southwest axis. The southeast front, which faces down the yard, is rendered and features three modern leaded casements with two lights each on the first floor, three skylights in the attic, and a three-centred arch with a keystone over the yard passage. The north front shows some timber framing, includes one gabled dormer, and is clad in clunch, ironstone rubble, and brick. To the north of the gate room is a much lower range with an old tile roof and a modern brick addition along the east side, which has a modern window in the northwest gable end, topped with timber-framed panels of thin scantling. The southwest side features a blank brick wall with exposed panels of timber framing, accessible from Long Garden Walk. This building is part of a group that includes Nos 1 to 9 (consecutive) and Nos 1 to 6 Town Hall Buildings on The Borough, as well as Nos 1 and 77 Castle Street, and the listed buildings from Nos 108 to 122 (consecutive) West Street.
