Description

This early to mid-19th century building, comprising numbers 5 and 5a Castle Street, is a three-storey brick structure with wide, flat eaves supported by slender cut brackets. It has a flat-pitched hipped slate roof and flanking chimneys. The upper floor features four square windows. The first floor has four windows with four panes each. The ground floor presents three narrower windows, with altered glazing, and a four-panel door in the second bay from the right. This door is set within a stone surround forming a three-centred arched opening, featuring moulded springers and a cornice. The doorway also includes narrow side lights and a flat-arched fanlight. To the right of the main building is a two-storey stable block. The stable block's upper window is three-centred arched, with a radiating and wreathed design. A plain arched door is situated to the left on the ground floor, while a larger three-centred arch on the right now contains a shop window with glazing bars. The right-hand portion of the lower section comprised premises formerly occupied by Michael Sargent, Photographers. Numbers 5 and 5a form a group of listed buildings with numbers 1 to 9 (consec) Lowndes Buildings, all on the west side of Castle Street.
