Description

No 4 Castle Street is a Grade II* listed building that features early 19th-century fronts attached to a timber-framed structure. The left block is lower and has three stories, finished in colour-washed stucco. It includes two three-light windows on the upper part, with two panes high on the second floor and four panes high on the first floor. The ground floor has a shop front with two windows and a deeply recessed central glazed double door, all framed with reeded pilasters, a plain frieze, and a small coved capping.

The right block is taller and also has three stories, with colour-washed stucco and projecting bands at the first and second floor levels. It features a moulded wood cornice and a flat-pitched hipped old tile roof. There are two windows with architrave frames flanking a central three-light window that has pilasters and a small cornice above. The ground floor has a similar central three-light window flanked by two doors. The right-hand door is a six-panel flush type with a rectangular fanlight above, surrounded by an architrave, plain frieze, and a delicate dentilled cornice. The left-hand door is also a six-panel design set in a deep reveal, featuring a reeded doorhead and a rectangular fanlight with a double central oval and curved scroll pattern, embellished with twist ornament on the sides. This door is sheltered by a shallow porch supported by slender reeded wall pilasters and Doric columns, which hold up an entablature with an enriched fluted frieze and a cornice decorated with feather ornament.

This building is part of a group that includes Nos 1 to 9 Lowndes Buildings on the west side of Castle Street.
