Description

The building at 6 and 7 Castle Street dates to the late 18th century and early 19th century, with a newer facade built in front of an older timber-framed structure. It is two storeys and has an attic. The upper part is constructed of brick with a moulded wooden eaves cornice supported by cut brackets, topped with a hipped roof covered in old tiles. There are three dormers, each containing small sash windows. The first floor has three windows, each with four panes. The ground floor features two 19th-century shopfronts. The left-hand shopfront is framed by engaged Doric columns at the corners and has an entablature; the central doorway has a three-centred arched opening set between a pair of windows and altered glazing. The right-hand shopfront incorporates an eight-pane window and a half-glazed door to the left, flanked by panelled pilasters and an entablature. The entire ground floor projects forward from the main wall and is capped with a low cast iron balcony with coupled vertical bars and a plain horizontal rail. These buildings, along with numbers 1 to 9 Lowndes Buildings on the same side of Castle Street, are considered to have group value.
