Description

9 Castle Street is an 18th-century building of two stories and an attic, with cellars, located on the west side of Castle Street. The building is constructed of brick upon a chamfered plinth, with the brickwork extending to a parapet that features stone coping. The roof is covered in old tiles and includes two dormers. The front has five windows on the first floor and four windows on the ground floor. A wide, central 6-panel door is topped by an arched fanlight, featuring a curved and scroll pattern with a small central lamp; the door is set within a plain reveal. The doorcase is characterized by modified Corinthian pilasters, a broken entablature with a dentilled cornice, and an open dentilled pediment. A narrow architrave frames the arch, which has a keyblock. Two stone steps lead to the door, and a wrought iron scraper is positioned to the right. A small, arched secondary door is located in the right-hand corner. A single cellar window is visible. The building forms a group with Nos. 1 to 9 (consec) Lowndes Buildings, also in Castle Street (West Side).
