Description
No 70 Castle Street is a building dating from around 1775, designed by George West the Elder. It is two storeys high with a cellar and is constructed of brick sitting on a chamfered plinth. The building features a slightly projecting parapet with stone coping and has a hipped roof covered with old tiles.
On the first floor, there are five windows with architrave frames, while the ground floor has four similar windows and a central six-panel door. The door is topped with an arched fanlight that has an elaborate carved and scroll pattern, which has a slightly Gothic style. The door is set within a panelled reveal and is framed by a doorcase with panelled pilasters, a cap mould that runs around the reveal and across the doorhead, scroll brackets, a broken cornice, and an open pediment. Access to the door is via three moulded stone steps.
All the listed buildings on the east side of Castle Street form a group.
