Description

An early 18th-century building, altered subsequently, located on Castle Street. It is two storeys high, with a basement and attic. The exterior is colour-washed brick laid on a chamfered base, with a moulded string course at the first-floor level and wide, flat, moulded eaves. The roof is hipped and covered in slate. The three central bays slightly project. There are five windows on the first floor, each with architrave frames but lacking glazing bars. The ground floor has four similar windows, and the basement has four windows. The central door is of six panels, with only the lower four panels opening; the two top panels contain a fixed hexagonal lamp. The door is set within a porch framed by two Corinthian columns, two wall pilasters that are fluted and half-reeded, and an entablature with a bracketed cornice. Seven moulded stone steps with wrought iron scroll pattern guard rails lead to the door, with similar rails flanking the entrance. The right-hand return front features a large arched stair window with radiating head glazing. The side and rear elevations are brick and have a coved wood cornice. The rear elevation remains in its original state, featuring two dormers. The interior retains its contemporary staircase and panelling. The building forms a group with numbers 1 to 9 Lowndes Buildings in Castle Street.
