Description

Number 8 and Number 9, known as The Queen's Head, are located on The Borough and date from the early 19th century, with Number 9 having a much older timber-framed core. Number 8 features a single bay front with stucco and a rusticated ground floor. It has a cornice string at the first floor level, a plain frieze, and a cornice that forms a parapet, topped with a nipped old tile roof. There is one window on the first floor with an architrave frieze and cornice, and on the ground floor, there is one window with a half-glazed door to the left.

The Queen's Head has a front that combines early and later 19th-century elements. It is three stories tall and includes a brick string at the second floor level and an eaves cornice. The hipped slate roof features three windows on the second floor, two three-light windows and a central single window on the first floor, and two poorly executed 19th-century windows on the ground floor. The central entrance has a six-panel door, with the upper panels glazed, surrounded by panelled pilasters and an entablature that breaks forward over the pilasters, topped with pediments. There is also a small secondary door to the right.

These buildings, along with Nos 1 to 9 (consecutive), including No 1A, and Nos 1 to 6 Town Hall Buildings on The Borough, as well as Nos 1 and 77 Castle Street, and the listed buildings from Nos 108 to 122 (consecutive) on West Street, form a group of listed buildings.
