Description
The former Westminster Bank Ltd, along with the south-east wing behind it, was built in 1865 for the three easternmost bays and in 1904 for the two westernmost bays. This building is significant as it closes the vista down Castle Street from the north end. It stands three storeys tall with five windows. The ground floor is stuccoed while the upper floors are made of painted brick. It features stringcourses, an eaves bracket cornice, and a parapet. The windows are set in moulded architrave surrounds with segmental heads and no glazing bars. The ground floor windows are flanked by pilasters, the first floor windows have pediments above them, and the second floor windows are adorned with keystones.
At the south-east end, facing west onto the car park, there is a range that likely dates back to the 17th century. This structure has two storeys and an attic, topped with a modern tile roof. Its front is made of old brick, which has been partly refaced. Moving south from the north end, there is a projecting bay with a single window below, followed by a two-storey and attic bay featuring a tile-hung gable, one attic window, and dilapidated windows below. Further south, there is a longer range with modern brick above and old brick below, displaying cross-shaped tie-plates. Timber-framing is also visible on the east side of this wing.
The Borough front of the Bush Hotel and Nos 29 to 44, which are consecutive, form a group with this building.
