Description

The Trustees Savings Bank, located at 14 Castle Place in Montrose, was designed by John Sim and completed in 1900. This building is a two-storey structure with an attic and features a prominent gable front. It showcases bold Tudor and Flemish architectural elements, constructed from sandstone ashlar. The exterior includes a base course, a frieze above the ground floor, and a cornice with moulding above the first floor. The windows have architraved margins and battered cills.

On the northwest elevation, which is the principal facade, there are two broad bays created by attached, half-octagonal columns that extend from the ground to the eaves. Each bay at the ground level features paired windows with 4-centred arched heads and hoodmoulds, with the right bay serving as the entrance. This entrance is adorned with an architrave that includes intricate carvings of acorns and oak leaves. The frieze above the ground floor is richly carved with designs including thistles and the inscription "Savings Bank." Each bay on the first floor has full-width 4-centred arches and four transomed round-arched lights. Carved stone griffons are positioned on the octagonal column capitals flanking the gablehead, which also features two smaller windows with 4-centred arched heads and the date "1900." The gablehead is topped with octagonal finials.

The northeast elevation adjoins 12/13 Castle Place, while the southwest elevation adjoins 16 Castle Place. The building has timber sash and case, plate glass windows, and a tall, broad, corniced wallhead stack on the southwest with a full complement of polygonal cans.

The interior of the building has been modernized on the ground floor, while the upper floors were not seen during the last inspection in 1998.
