Description
Number 77 Castle Street, which has an arcaded frontage to The Borough, is a modern two-storey building completed in stages, starting with the western end in 1932. Designed by G M Aylwin, W T Benslyn, and H Falkner, it reflects local efforts to enhance the area while respecting the character of the 17th and 18th centuries. The building features a 7-bay frontage to Castle Street and a 5-bay frontage to The Borough. The Castle Street side is constructed of brick on a stone plinth with stone dressings, an enriched coved plaster cornice, and a tile roof topped with a central lantern and a weathercock shaped like a ship. The ground floor has an arched design with a central six-panel double door and four windows. To the left, there is a yard door with double eight-panel doors and a curved head, while the right side leads to the arcade facing The Borough. The Borough side is similar in style to the Castle Street front but has an open and arcaded ground floor. This building forms part of a group of listed buildings that includes Nos 1 and 77 Castle Street, Nos 1 to 9 (consecutive) including No 1A, and Nos 1 to 6 Town Hall Buildings.
