Description
The Town Hall Buildings, Nos. 1 to 5, form a block with No. 77 Castle Street and are linked at the east end to the Bailiffs’ Hall (No. 6 Town Hall Buildings). The building dates from the 18th century and is constructed of brick, with a free 18th century style and an open arcaded ground floor.
Nos. 1 and 2 have four bays, with three four-light dormer casements in the roof. They feature a heavy modillion eaves cornice. The ground floor has an arcade of Corinthian columns in antis, an entablature, and plain rectangular coffers in the arcade soffit. No. 3 has three window bays and one four-light dormer casement. It has an enriched coved plaster cornice and an arcade of three round-headed openings supported on Doric columns, with groined vaulting to the soffit. Nos. 4 and 5 have a first floor recessed behind a balustraded parapet of the ground floor arcade. The central first floor opening has a shell-headed canopy supported on two pairs of ornate cut scroll brackets, with a short section of balustrading above and below the eaves. Segmental headed windows are located to either side. The ground floor arcade features Ionic columns with a pediment and balustraded parapet. The soffit of the arcade contains 17th century style panelling with motifs of fruit and flowers.
The buildings are part of a group that also includes Nos. 1 to 9 (including No. 1A) Town Hall Buildings, Nos. 1 to 6 Town Hall Buildings (The Borough), No. 77 Castle Street, and Nos. 108 to 122 (consec) West Street.
