Description

Number 76, which includes the premises of Bateman Optician and Harold Hodgson, is a late 18th-century building that has been altered on the ground floor. It stands three stories tall and is constructed of brick, featuring a moulded eaves cornice supported by pairs of cut brackets. The roof is covered with old tiles.

On the upper floors, there are three windows, with the outer windows having four panes each. The ground floor has a central six-panel door topped by an arched fanlight with a radiating and circular pattern. This door is set in a flush panelled reveal that has a reeded band around the arch. The doorcase is adorned with delicate fluted engaged Doric columns, a broken entablature with roundels on the frieze, and an open pediment.

The two shops on the ground floor are designed with elaborate but delicate details that are modern yet sympathetic to the character of the house. The left shop, Bateman Optician, features a triple-arched front with two small box windows and a central half-glazed door. The right shop, Harold Hodgson, has two rectangular bays and a central glazed door. Both shops are framed with pilasters and entablatures of different designs.

All the listed buildings on the east side of Castle Street form a group.
