Description

No 6 Town Hall Buildings, also known as Bailiffs' Hall and Arcade, was rebuilt between 1930 and 1934 as part of a block of buildings that includes the National Westminster Bank facing Castle Street and a group of shops with offices above facing The Borough. The eastern section features a two-storey brick wall with raised brick paneling in one bay, a moulded brick cornice, and a tall attic parapet with three circular windows.

The street front is a modern design with an elaborately curved Dutch gable end, featuring brickwork that echoes the older style of the east wall, and a large arched window on the first floor. The cornice from the east wall extends around to the front, stopping on either side of the central window, which is above a brick arch flanked by two smaller arches with brick niches above. Brick Ionic pilasters frame the arches and niches, creating a rich and picturesque appearance.

A former chimney from the old bank building designed by Norman Shaw, noted for its elaborate paneling and cut brickwork, is positioned above and to one side of the Bailiffs' Hall. The arcade features luxurious 17th-century style panelling in the soffit, and there is a fanlight in the shop front made by Brown of Hammersmith in the 1930s. The Arcade shops are illustrated in Country Life, July 3rd, 1942, plate 6.

This building is part of a group that includes Nos 1 to 9 (consecutive) (including No 1A), Nos 1 to 6 Town Hall Buildings (The Borough), Nos 1 and 77 Castle Street, and the listed buildings from Nos 108 to 122 (consecutive) West Street.
