Description

Number 1, The Borough is a 16th-century building that stands two storeys high with an attic, positioned at right angles to the street. It features a long, irregular timber-framed structure with colour-washed brick infilling and a variety of window styles. The entrance includes a six-panelled door set within reveals and is framed by an architrave, topped with a moulded cornice supported by brackets. The north gable end is hung with tiles, and the roof is covered with old tiles.

The street-facing side of the building has been modernized in the 19th century, with a shop front that resembles the upper storey of Number 2 The Borough, which has a rendered front, paired bracketed eaves, quoins, and shouldered segmental architraves. The first floor features applied post and pan timbering, a tiled canopy, and transomed and mullioned windows. There is also a three-centred arched carriageway on the right side of the ground floor.

Historically, this building was known as The Bear Inn before the mid-18th century, as noted in Nigel Temple's "Farnham Buildings and People." Number 1, along with Numbers 1 to 9 (consecutive), including Number 1A, and Numbers 1 to 6 Town Hall Buildings, as well as Numbers 1 and 77 Castle Street, and the listed buildings from Numbers 108 to 122 (consecutive) West Street, all form a cohesive group of heritage buildings.
