Description

The Golden Lion Public House is a three-storey building with a two-window frontage and an integral short rear wing, along with a one-and-a-half storey wing beyond. Originally timber framed, it has been extensively rebuilt in brick and rendered over, topped with slate roofs. The 19th-century public house frontage faces the street and features a wide through-passage to the right, with entrances on either side and a heavy continuous fascia. The upper windows are sash windows with flat arched painted heads, and there is a continuous sill band for the low windows on the upper storey. The rear wing of the frontage building includes the 19th-century public house front, which has a moulded fascia over windows that are now blocked, along with a six-panelled door in a plain architrave. Above this, there are two tripartite sash windows. The rear wing features paired arched three-light windows on the ground floor, likely from the late 19th century, and has rendered mock timber cladding.

Timber framing is exposed in the gable wall of the frontage building, showcasing square panelled framing with a middle rail and arched braces. The paired posts at the front corner appear to be later additions. Inside, there is a stone four-centred chamfered arched fireplace in the rear wall, with a similar fireplace backing onto it in the rear room of the original building's wing. This rear room also has a chamfered and stopped axial ceiling beam. The long wing beyond has been heavily modified internally, but it retains a series of eight roughly chamfered axial beams and a side-wall chimney, although the fireplace has been renewed.
