Description
This is a late 18th-century building comprising numbers 14 to 18 on Northgate Street. It is constructed of red brick and has a Mansard roof covered in old tile, with a swept-out profile at the eaves. The roof features six dormers, each with a segmental head and sash windows retaining their original glazing bars.
The first floor has a coupled window on the left, alongside five other single sash windows. The central window is a false facade, and one window lacks glazing bars; all have block sills and flat brick arches. On the ground floor, number 14 features a mid-19th century shop front with a window and glazed door. This is framed by panelled pilasters, a plain frieze, and a cornice. Numbers 15 and 16 have symmetrical shop fronts dating to circa 1830. Originally, these shop fronts each featured a three-light window with drained heads on colonettes, and a glazed outer door of a similar design. The window of number 16 is now plate glass. Both shop fronts are framed with Doric pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice. Numbers 17 and 18 each have a single window and a recessed six-panel door with an arched radiating fanlight, which is now blind in number 18.
The buildings numbered 1 to 18 on this side of the street, together with the other listed buildings on the South West Side of Market Place, form a group of buildings of group value.
