Description

This is a mid-18th century building on Northgate Street. It is three storeys high and has a projecting stone plinth. The exterior is painted plaster, likely on a stone structure, with chamfered quoins and a flat, moulded eaves cornice. The roof is hipped and covered in stone tiles. The building features two three-story angular bays, each with three-pane central windows and two-pane side windows set within architrave surrounds. The upper portions of the main cornice wrap around the bays. A central false window is present on the upper floors. The ground floor features a recessed six-panel door with an architrave surround and a doorcase composed of engaged Doric columns with moulded capitals, with the moulding extending over the doorhead. Above the door is a broken entablature incorporating a triglyph frieze and an open pediment, along with a false arched and radiating fanlight, and a decorative door knocker. The building forms a group with numbers 1 to 18 on the Market Place’s South West Side.
