Description
17 Market Place is an early 18th-century building featuring two storeys, an attic, and a basement. It is constructed of brick on a projecting stone base that has a double step design. The building has chamfered stone quoins and a moulded stone cornice supported by carved brackets with acanthus ornamentation. The hipped roof is covered with old tiles and extends over the cornice, featuring two dormers with heavy moulded cornice heads.
The façade includes six windows on the first floor, each surrounded by stone architraves and cills. The ground floor has five similar windows, which are enhanced by an additional curved frieze and cornice above each. All windows retain their original glazing bars. A large eight-panel double door, positioned off centre, is set within a stone bolection surround that includes a curved frieze, moulded cornice, and a broken pediment supported by carved stone brackets with acanthus ornament. This door is accessed by a flight of three semi-circular stone steps leading from a small terrace in front of the house. There are two wrought iron scroll-pattern scrapers at the entrance, and four basement windows are located in narrow areas. The area rails are made of plain wrought iron, featuring diagonal and rectangular patterns, and return on each side of the door with bold strap scroll guards. The sides of the house are adorned with a deep coved cornice.
Inside, the building boasts fine plasterwork and panelling, as well as an original staircase. To the right of the house, there is a stable block from the late 18th century, constructed of brick with dentilled eaves and an old tile roof. This stable block features a pair of central-arched stable doors (one of which is blocked) and a central-arched door with a radiating fanlight, along with two circular and one central oval loft windows above.
The listed buildings on the south-west side, south-east side, Market Hall, Market Cross, and the Fountain form a group, as do all the listed buildings on the south-west side with Nos 1 to 18 (consecutive) Northgate Street.
