Description
The retaining wall, rails, gates, and stable yard wall of Number 17, located on the southwest side of Market Place, is a notable structure. It features a low stone retaining wall at the front of the house, with square-section wrought iron spearhead rails and central gates, which are flanked by dog rails between square stone piers. These piers have an oval panel treatment (restored) and are topped with finely carved stone balls and leaf pattern ornamentation. There is also a wrought iron scroll overthrow. The stables have a brick wall at the front of the yard, which separates the yard from the house front, sweeping up to the house wall. This wall terminates at the street front with a square rusticated stone pier that has a ball finial, similar to the central piers. The listed buildings on the southwest side, as well as those on the southeast side, along with the Market Hall, Market Cross, and the Fountain, form a group. Additionally, all the listed buildings on the southwest side form a group with Numbers 1 to 18 (consecutive) on Northgate Street.
