Description
Nos 19 and 20 Northgate Street are early 19th-century buildings that stand three storeys tall. They are constructed from Bath stone and feature a projecting plinth, with string courses at the first and second floor cill levels, and a moulded cornice topped by a blocking course. The slate roof adds to their classic appearance.
These buildings are symmetrical, with each having an outer window that is four panes wide and an inner window that is three panes wide on the upper floors. On the ground floor, No 19 has a six-panel door, while No 20 has a half-glazed door that is a later addition. Both doors are topped with rectangular fanlights featuring a crossed diagonal vertical bar pattern, all set within a stone architrave with a cornice supported by console brackets. The outer bays of the ground floor have plain shop windows, which also have similar cornices on console brackets above.
Nos 19 and 20 Northgate Street, along with St. Mary's Congregational Church and Sandcliffe and Northgate House, form a notable group in the area.
