Description
Sandcliffe is an early 18th-century building located on Northgate Street. It is two storeys high and constructed from Bath stone, set on a projecting plinth. The front features three bays, which are divided by wide pilasters. There is a string course at the first-floor level of the outer bays, and a moulded cornice that breaks forward over the pilasters, along with a blocking course that has an incised acanthus pattern above the pilasters. The roof is slate-covered.
On the first floor, there are five windows, with the central window featuring an eared architrave surround. The ground floor has four windows, all with projecting cills and intact glazing bars. The tall central entrance consists of double doors with two panels, which are studded and flanked by a five-pane rectangular fanlight adorned with cast lead ornamentation and a contemporary pair of iron ring handles. The door is set within an architrave surround and a plain outer frame, supported by carved stone console brackets that hold up a cornice over a plain frieze. Additionally, there are cast iron scrapers with acanthus and scroll patterns.
The interior may also be of interest. Sandcliffe, along with St Mary's Congregational Church, Nos 19 and 20, and Northgate House, forms a group of significant buildings.
