Description

The Cottage is a late 15th or early 16th century hall-house, originally comprising three bays, with a two-bay hall and one end floored. It is timber-framed with painted brick infilling, although the south front is refaced with painted brick on the ground floor and tile hung above. The roof is hipped and thatched. Four casement windows are present.

Inside, a crown post is visible, and the original partition wall remains between the hall and service area, with two doors. A rare survival is the lath and daub hood for an inserted smoke bay; the wooden jambs of the smoke hood now frame the inserted brick chimney. This is one of only two remaining medieval thatched houses in Charlwood. It is suggested that the original roof pitch may have been intended for Horsham stone slabs.
