Description
Dormers is a late 15th century hall-house consisting of four bays, with a two-bay open hall and both ends floored. A modern wing, designed to match the original style, has been added to the north. The building is two storeys high and timber-framed, resting on a base of Charlwood stone. It features square framing with curved braces and infilling of plaster or painted brick. The hipped thatched roof has two dormers and three casement windows. The original front entrance is blocked, and the doorcase has been relocated to the side elevation. Inside, there are three crown posts, and traces of an added smoke bay, with a beam from the open truss used for hanging bacon flitches to smoke. The upright posts have jowls. This house is one of only two remaining medieval thatched houses in Charlwood.
