Description
This is a coal tax post located outside "Lessworth" in Esher, dating from around 1860. It is made of metal and stands approximately 4½ feet high. The post features a four-legged plinth with a stop-chamfered pier above, topped by a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. On the front of the capital band, there is a cast shield of the City of London, and below on the pier, the lettering reads: "24 & 25 CAP VICT. 42". This post served as a marker for the boundary where duty was payable on coal, a tax that has origins dating back to the 1660s.
