Description

The Travellers Rest, also known as Wolsey's Well, is a grotto built between 1730 and 1740. It is constructed from random flint and rubblestone set in mortar. The grotto features three arched seats at the angled front, with stone slabs serving as seats. Above the center arch is a square panel that has the letter "M" inscribed on it. This structure was erected by Henry Pelham, who was the younger brother of the Earl of Newcastle. It is referenced in Pevsner's "Buildings of England, Surrey" from 1971.
