Description

This coal tax post, dating from around 1861, is located on the west side of Arbrook Lane in Claygate, within the Borough of Elmbridge. It is made of metal and features a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above. The post has a moulded capital and a pyramidal top. A shield representing the City of London is cast into the band of the capital. The front of the pier has lettering that reads: "CAP VIC 42". This post served as a boundary marker for coal and wine duty, indicating where tax was payable, with the coal tax origins tracing back to the 1660s.
