Description

The coal tax post, located at the National Grid Reference TQ 14226288 in Esher, dates from around 1861. It is made of metal and features a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above. The post has a moulded capital and a pyramidal top. On the front of the capital band, there is a cast City of London Shield. The lettering on the pier reads: "24 & 25 CAP. VIC 42". This post served as a marker indicating the boundary where duty was payable for coal and wine, with the coal tax originating as far back as the 1660s.
