Description
The Close is a former coach house and stables that has been converted into Claremont Junior School. It dates from the late 18th century and has 19th and 20th-century extensions. The building is constructed of brown brick with red brick and stone dressings, featuring mansard slate roofs with ridge and end stacks. It consists of one storey and an attic in the entrance screen, with two storeys in the wings and the main block of stables arranged around a central courtyard.
The entrance screen features two three-bay ranges on either side of a central arched and pedimented gateway, with brick impost mouldings and gauged bricks forming the arch. There are round arched windows with 20th-century glazing bars, three on each side, along with window lunettes at the ends. The main stable block has seven bays, with single bay wings projecting at either end and angle pilaster piers. An ashlar band runs along the base of the parapet, with glazing bar sash windows under cambered heads on the first floor. The ground floor has 20th-century casement windows.
The centre three bays project, with the central bay extending further under an octagonal stone lantern on a moulded square pedestal, topped with an iron weathervane and a 19th-century clock face on all four sides. There are 20th-century double glazed doors beneath a flat hood at the centre of the ground floor, and a 20th-century extension is located at the rear.
