Description
White Cottage is a house dating from around 1720, likely designed by Sir John Vanbrugh. It is constructed of whitewashed brick and has a slate roof. The building features an irregular cruciform plan and stands two storeys tall, with a brick plat band above the ground floor. The front has three bays under a gable or pediment, with sash windows on the first floor. The central window is set in a recessed panel that arches into the gable. The ground floor has glazing bar sash windows set in a blind arcade, which includes projecting keystones. A central half-glazed door is flanked by side windows and topped with a large traceried fanlight. To the right, there is a two-bay range that is set back, featuring a rounded window in the gable and glazing bar sash windows below. The left-hand return front has a plat band above the ground floor, with baroque projecting keystones above the ground floor glazing bar sash windows in block surrounds. A brick dentil band decorates the pediment. At the rear, there are three bays topped with a dentilled pediment, and a central half-glazed door is set in an arched panel with rusticated quoins surrounding it and rusticated arch voussoirs above. Inside, there is a vaulted entrance hall.
